Revisiting a Classic Game
The Legend of Zelda is a famous Nintendo game released in 1986 and has since become a huge franchise. The original game featured a pixelated world with simple arrow keyboard controls to move the main character.
My hope was to design an interactive birthday card by recreating the look and feel of the Legend of Zelda, using only Figma’s prototyping tools.
Creating the World
I watched a quick video on YouTube to get a feel for the original NES Zelda game. I loved the 2D, pixel-art world and easy navigation style, and I wanted my birthday card to have a similar aesthetic. I threw together a quick style guide with visuals of the design elements I wanted to use in the final prototype.
I prototyped a quick flow of Link’s adventure through his world, and added navigation and microcopy to help guide my colleague (Luke) to the end goal —
a very pink birthday cake hidden in a dungeon. 🎂
